(Concerning the essential Druish practice of "Treehugging," which all REAL DRUIDS are inherentily involved in.)
AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, 2006, Al Gore. Director Davis Guggenheim eloquently weaves the science of global warming with Al Gore's personal history and lifelong commitment to reversing the effects of global climate change in the most talked-about documentary of the year. An audience and critical favorite, An Inconvenient Truth makes the compelling case that global warming is real, man-made, and its effects will be cataclysmic if we don’t act now. Gore presents a wide array of facts and information in a thoughtful and compelling way: often humorous, frequently emotional, always fascinating. In the end, An Inconvenient Truth accomplishes what all great films should: it leaves the viewer shaken, involved and inspired (DVD)
ANTAGONISTS IN THE CHURCH; HOW TO IDENTIFY AND DEAL WITH DESTRUCTIVE CONFLICT, 1988, Kenneth C. Haugk. An essential book for Pagans as well as Christians, written by an evangelical minister. This book carries the recommendation of Issac Bonawits and Oberon Zell-Ravenheart.
THE BIG ONE, 1998, Michael Moore. Michael Moore's second documentary follows his Midwest book tour to promote Downsize This. One of his Milwaukee tour escorts explains that medium-sized cities in the Midwest tend not to attract tours by the self-important celebrities of the Coasts; instead, they attract "more thoughtful authors like Michael." His kind of thoughtfulness evokes both laughter at, and disgust with, corporate America. Moore gives voice to well-reasoned arguments that have most easily gotten lost amid corporate downsizing and reliance on "temporary" employees. (DVD)
BIOSPHERE POLITICS: A Cultural Odyssey from the Middle Ages to the New Age, 1992, Jeremey Rifkin.
BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE, 2002, Michael Moore. "Michael Moore's Academy Award winning documentary tackles a meaty subject: gun control. Moore skillfully lays out arguments surrounding the issue and short-circuits them all, leaving one impossible question: why do Americans kill each other more often than people in any other democratic nation? Moore focuses his quest around the shootings at Columbine High School and the shooting of one 6-year-old by another near his own hometown of Flint, Michigan. By approaching the headquarters of K-Mart (where the Columbine shooters bought their ammo) and going to Charlton Heston's own home, Moore demands accountability from the forces that support unrestricted gun sales in the U.S. His arguments are conducted with the humor and empathy that have made Moore more than just a gadfly; he's become a genuine voice of reason in a world driven by fear and greed." --Bret Fetzer (DVD)
THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO, 1848, Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels. Even more relevant today as it was when it was first written, as now we are seeing the fruits of greed and runaway capitalism in the destruction of our environment and our American addiction to consumerism.
DANGEROUS RELIGION, 2004, Brendan Cathbad Myers. Dangerous Religion is a "thought-opera" of spiritual contemplations on Neo-Pagan and environmental themes. It was also written to be a manual for environmental activists and other participants in the anti-globalization movement.

The book describes a planetary Will to Life expressed by everything in nature from animals and plants to the material elements. This concept of "Global Animism" requires radical transformations in our total lives, from the level of personal belief all the way to political and economic organization.

Three main sections distinguish particular themes. The first is called "In the beginning was the Mother" and is primarily concerned with environmental and religious matters, particularly in the Celtic world view.

The second section, called "Separating Reality from Illusion" examines social and political matters, especially how the global market is a manifestation of the Will to Life in pathological disorder.

The third and final section, "The Great Silence," brings the previous themes into a personal and more purely spiritual unity. It suggests some ways how the disordered Will to Life may be rectified and how we must act to do it.

DAS KAPITAL: A Critique of Political Economy, 1848, Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels. Albeit, not wholly prophetic Das Kapital holds it's own. With all the high interest rates, M&As, Enron, etc. Capitalism has appeared to be the best method but Marx reveals (though no secret) that Capitalism can easily be infested with greed and exploitation when devoid of ethics and "dehumanitization" for the economic gain of a few carried out by those order to do so for the gain of the former. A great book to not be taken lightly nor to strickly adhered to. A book which may begin to reveal (as in epiphany) a not-too-pretty picture of division within our own borders. I re-read this book during the 9-11 timframe and during the subsequent airline and other semi-demises (including the "big one" - Enron) and sent a chill up my spine. A capitalist culture without compassion and ethics is doom to fall. Read this book (choose your chapter) and see for yourself!
DESPAIR AND PERSONAL POWER IN THE NUCLEAR AGE, 1983, Joanna Macy. A powerful influence on feminist political activism, particularly peace and anti-nuclear.
DOWNSIZE THIS!: Random Threats from an Unarmed American, 1997, Michael Moore. Americans today are working harder, working longer and yet for most of us, in this time of ruthless downsizing and political cronyism, job security, a decent standard of living and a comfortable retirement are becoming harder and harder to find. In this brilliantly funny and right-on-target diatribe, irreverent everyman Michael Moore gives his own bold views on who's behind the fading of the American dream.
DREAMING THE DARK: MAGIC, SEX AND POLITICS, 1982, Starhawk. Good ideas about female/male relations, power, sex, spirituality, and of course, the Goddess and the God.
DUDE, WHERE'S MY COUNTRY?, 2003, Michael Moore. In this book, the author is on a mission: Regime Change. The man who slithered into the White House on tracks greased by his daddy’s oil buddies is one of many targets, and no one is safe: corporate barons who have bilked millions out of their employees’ lifetime savings, legislators who have stripped away our civil liberties in the name of "homeland security," and even that right-wing brother-in-law of yours (yes, we all have one) who manages, year after year, through his babbling idiocy, to ruin Thanksgiving dinner.
EARTH IN THE BALANCE: ECOLOGY & THE HUMAN SPIRIT 1992, Al Gore, A rationale and blueprint for saving the planet, by the President-Elect of the US! And there is even mention of The Goddess!
FAHRENHEIT 9/11, 2004, Michael Moore. Michael Moore presents a searing examination of the role played by greed and oil in the wake of the tragic events of 9/11. (DVD)
THE FINAL FOREST: The Battle for the Last Great Trees of the Pacific Northwest, 1993, William Dietrich. In a riveting exploration of our connection to all that we cherish and exploit on Earth, a Pulitzer Prize-winning correspondent for The Seattle Times examines the human side of the struggle that looms as the fate of our forest s is determined.
FROM THE REDWOOD FOREST: Ancient Trees and the Bottom Line, 1998, Joan Dunning, Doug Thron. A passionate account of the struggle to save an area of northern California from logging. Describes how it was logged sustainably for decades by a family-owned business, but was subjected to liquidation logging by the Texas corporation that took over the company in 1985. Augmenting the narrative are 57 color photographs by Doug Thron of the forest before and after logging and of protests.
HEART OF A HEROINE: Saving the Last Redwoods, 2001, Julia "Butterfly" Hill with Michael Toms. On this extraordinary audio program, Julia Butterfly Hill, the remarkable woman who inspired the world by living in a giant redwood tree named “Luna” to protest the practices of the logging industry, shares her story of commitment, perseverance and courage with New Dimensions Radio host Michael Toms. (Audio Cassette)
JULIA BUTTERFLY HILL, 2002, Dawn FitzGerald. (Biography)
THE LAST STAND: The War Between Wall Street and Main Street over California's Ancient Redwoods, 1997, David Harris. Here is a compelling American story--a tale of greed, fanaticism, and devotion--that ranges from the paneled boardrooms of Wall Street and Rodeo Drive to the banks of the Eel River that curve past the cavernous mills of Pacific Lumber, owner of the Headwaters Forest, the world's largest privately held stand of ancient redwoods. In this chronicle of takeover of Pacific Lumber by financier Charles Hurwitz, David Harris, brings his astonishing literary gifts, as well as his own moral passion, to the riveting and important story of the struggle to save the Headwaters Forest. Harris gives us a metaphor for the disappearance of an arguably more gentile, kinder capitalism--a capitalism that, in large measure, was responsible for an America now under siege. This is a book about how some people, often against their own will, end up killing the very thing that had long given them sustenance and shelter--the forest itself.
THE LEGACY OF LUNA: The Story of a Tree, a Woman and the Struggle to Save the Redwoods, 2001, Julia "Butterfly" Hill. A young woman named Julia Butterfly Hill climbed a 200-foot redwood in December 1997. She didn't come down for 738 days. The tree, dubbed Luna, grows in the coastal hills of Northern California, on land owned by the Maxxam Corporation. In 1985 Maxxam acquired the previous landlord, Pacific Lumber, then proceeded to "liquidate its assets" to pay off the debt--in other words, clear-cut the old-growth redwood forest. Environmentalists charged the company with harvesting timber at a nonsustainable level. Earth First! in particular devised tree sit-ins to protest the logging. When Hill arrived on the scene after traveling cross-country on a whim, loggers were preparing to clear-cut the hillside where Luna had been growing for 1,000 years. The Legacy of Luna, part diary, part treatise, and part New Age spiritual journey, is the story of Julia Butterfly Hill's two-year arboreal odyssey.
ONE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE: Inspiring Actions that Change our World, 2002, Julia "Butterfly" Hill. After her record-breaking two year tree sit, Julia Butterfly Hill has ceaslessly continued her efforts to promote sustainability and ecologically-minded ways to save the old-growth redwoods she acted so valiantly to protect. Here she provides advice on how to promote change and improve the health of the planet, distilled into an essential handbook.
THE POLITICS OF THE SOLAR AGE, 1981, Hazel Henderson.
ROGER AND ME, 1989, Michael Moore. Documentary directed and narrated by Michael Moore. When his hometown is devastated by the plant closure of an American corporate giant (making record profits, one should note), the hell-raising political commentator with a prankster streak tries to turn his camera on General Motors Chairman Roger B. Smith, the elusive Roger of the title, and the film is loosely structured around Moore's odyssey to track down the corporate giant for an interview. (DVD)
RULES FOR RADICALS, 1989, Saul Alinsky. Simply the best political organizing book ever written.
SAVING THE EARTH: A CITIZEN'S GUIDE TO ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION, 1990, Will Steger & Jon Bowermaster
SPIRITUAL DIMENSION OF GREEN POLITICS, 1985-6, Charlene Spretnak, Fritjof Capra. Shows Green politics to be compatible with ancient Goddess religion yet adaptable to needs of modem society.
STUPID WHITE MEN ...and Other Sorry Excuses for the State of the Nation!, 2002, Michael Moore. 60 percent of Americans are "upset or angry" about this land in which we now live -- a land where crooked courts select the president and money rules the day. So if you're feeling the same way and you're wondering what's going to give out first -- the economy, Dick Cheney's pacemaker, or your new VW Beetle -- here's the book for you.
TIMBER WARS, 1994, Judi Bari. A collection of essays and transcripts of interviews and speeches by Earth First!er Judi Bari who survived first a 1990 car-bombing that left her paralyzed, then subsequent implication in her own attack, in spite of clear motives and death-threats from others. These articles and essays provide a history of Earth First!'s work and internal struggles, the involvement of the timber corporations, Richard Held (of COINTELPRO fame) and the FBI in slandering Earth First!, as well as Bari's own complex relationship with the organization and some of its tactics.
TRUTH OR DARE: Encounters with Power, Authority, and Mystery, 1987, Starhawk. Major theoretical and practical text on power in society and personal relationships, and how we can build a new paradigm.
WEBS OF POWER: Notes from the Global Uprising, 2002, Starhawk. Starhawk chronicles the global justice movement sparked by Seattle's 1999 anti-World Trade Organization protest that continues around the world today. Combining an analysis of globalization with tales of action 'from the trenches,' Starhawk outlines a political, economic and spiritual vision of the future, and shows how we can transform rage and fear into positive action.
