A
caveat: With the exception of Dr. Ronald Huttons
work, all the books on Druids and Druidism herein should
be taken with a grain of salt. Although these are all generally
well researched, scholarly materials (and
they wouldn't be here if we couldn't recommend them),
most contain speculation, rather than hard fact, about the
Druids. Because it was an oral tradition, no one really
knows for sure what the Druids thought, or believed, or
how they functioned, so when confronted with uncomfortable
chasms in their findings, some authors try to fill in the
blanks with their own speculations and prejudices. In other
words, your personal gnosis about Druids is as good as anything
you'll read here. |

A
MILITARY HISTORY OF IRELAND, 1997, Thomas Bartlett
(Editor), Keith Jeffery.18 essays on the history of
the Irish soldier and Irish armies, beginning in pre-1100
and concluding with a review of current military policies
and problems in Northern Ireland and the Republic. The essays
are written by recognized scholars who are authorities on
the times and topics. Several examine the origins of the
enviable reputation that medieval Irish soldiers had for
stamina and fighting. Others discuss Irish mercenaries and,
ironically, the chronically anemic condition of the Republic's
military force and how the more robust Irish Republican
Army has grown in the north. The current status, policies,
and plans of the Republic's army, the paramilitary groups
in the north, and their relationships with the U.S. military
are objectively explained without lapsing into politics. |

GODS
AND HEROES OF THE CELTS, 1994, Marie-Louise Sjoestedt.
Gods and Heroes of the Celts is an excellent, approachable,
rich text that provides a wonderful introduction to ancient
Celtic myth, religion, and culture. Sjoestedt discusses
the traits of Celtic mythology, the Gods of the Continental
Celts, the Mother-Goddess concept (in Ireland specifically),
the concept of the Chieftain God, the relationship between
the physical and mythical/spiritual world, and the role
of the hero within and the hero outside of the tribe. These
topic selections cover a great deal of important concepts
in ancient Celtic mythology and society, and while the chapters
aren't very long, Sjoestedt makes clear and important arguments
that are easy to read without being innately obvious or
insignificant. |
