AN INTRODUCTION TO ORIENTAL MYTHOLOGY, 1998, Clio Whittaker.
THE ART OF HAPPINESS: A Handbook for Living, 1998, His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, with Howard C. Cutler. (OMS recommended: Written by the only person on Earth who truly Groks: "Thou art God.") Ask yourself if you really need something; our enemies can be our teachers; compassion brings peace of mind. Cutler pushes: But some people do seem happy with lots of possessions; but "suffering is life" is so pessimistic; but going to extremes provides the zest in life; but what if I don't believe in karma? As the Dalai Lama's responses become more involved, a coherent philosophy takes shape. Cutler then develops the Dalai Lama's answers in the context of scientific studies and cases from his own practice, substantiating and elaborating on what he finds to be a revolutionary psychology. Like any art, the art of happiness requires study and practice--and the talent for it, the Dalai Lama assures us, is in our nature. --Brian Bruya
THE ART OF HAPPINESS AT WORK, 2003, His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama. (OMS recommended:)Written by the only person on Earth who truly Groks: "Thou art God," the author explores issues such as work and identity, making money, the Buddhist concept of "right livelihood," and transforming dissatisfaction at work. The discussion appears simple, if not obvious, at first, but upon closer scrutiny, the Dalai Lama's profound wisdom and sensitivity emerges. For the Dalai Lama, basic human values such as kindness, tolerance, compassion, honesty, and forgiveness are the source of human happiness.
THE BAHA'I FAITH: The Emerging Global Religion, 2003, William S. Hatcher, J. Douglas Martin (An Islamic "cult," Baha'i's are persecuted in Iran, the birthplace of Baha'iism)
CARAVAN OF DREAMS, 1988, Idries Shah. Sufism (An Islamic "cult," Sufis are a persecuted minority in countries controlled by Islamic Fundamentalists).
CHINESE MYTHOLOGY, 1968, Anthony Christie.
THE DALAI LAMA'S BOOK OF WISDOM, 2000, His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama. (OMS recommended: Written by the only person on Earth who truly Groks: "Thou art God.") A little book for those in search of words to calm and inspire. In this gift book His Holiness the Dalai Lama imparts his message: the importance of love, compassion and forgiveness. His Holiness the Dalai Lama describes how to bring wisdom and compassion into our busy, stressful everyday lives. A beautiful selection of words from His Holiness that will help you to face difficult emotions such as anger in yourself and in others with genuine acceptance and understanding.
ETHICS FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM, 2001, His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama. (OMS recommended: Written by the only person on Earth who truly Groks: "Thou art God.") In a modern society characterized by insensitivity to violence, ambivalence to the suffering of others, and a high-octane profit motive, is talk of ethics anything more than a temporary salve for our collective conscience? The Dalai Lama thinks so. In his Ethics for the New Millennium, the exiled leader of the Tibetan people shows how the basic concerns of all people--happiness based in contentment, appeasement of suffering, forging meaningful relationships--can act as the foundation for a universal ethics.
FOLK RELIGION IN JAPAN, 1968, Ichiro Hori.
FOUNDATIONS OF TIBETAN MYSTICISM, 1969, Anagarika Govinda
THE GODS OF INDIA: Hindu Polytheism, 1985, Alain Danielou.

(OMS recommended: Written by the only person on Earth who truly Groks: "Thou art God," the Dalai Lama reminds us that developing peace of mind means paying attention to our daily attitudes and choices as well as taking the time to meditate and be prayerful. The six-part book covers Buddhist meditation techniques and visualization exercises as well as daily thoughts and actions that foster morality and wisdom. )
JAPANESE MYTHOLOGY, 1991, Juliet Piggot
KUNDUN, 1997, Martin Scorsese. Chronicles the life of the 14th Dalai Lama, Kundun defies conventional narrative in favor of an episodic approach, presenting a sequential flow of events from the life of the young leader of Buddhist Tibet. From the moment he is recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama in 1937 to his exile from Tibet in the wake of China's invasion. (DVD)
NEAR EASTERN MYTHOLOGY, 1969, John Gray. Mesopotamia, Syria, Palestine.
THE RAZOR'S EDGE, 1984, John Byrum. Based on Somerset Maughan's classic novel about innocence, war and the long journey to find self-meaning which takes the main character, played by Bill Murray, to Tibet and beyond. The script was developed by Bill Murray along with John Byrum, and Murray practically blackmailed the studio to let him make the movie (holding Ghostbusters up). (DVD)
THE PHILOSOPHIES OF INDIA, 1969, Heinrich Robert Zimmer.
SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET, 1997, Jean-Jacques Annaud. Brad Pitt plays Heinrich Harrer, in this true story about a Nazi party member whose life was changed by his experiences in Tibet with the Dalai Lama. Having survived a treacherous climb on the challenging peak of Nanga Parbat and a stint in a British POW camp, Harrer and climbing guide Peter Aufschnaiter (nicely played by David Thewlis) arrive at the Tibetan city of Lhasa, where the 14-year-old Dalai Lama lives as ruler of Tibet. Their stay is longer than either could have expected (the "seven years" of the title), and their lives are forever transformed by their proximity to the Tibetan leader and the peaceful ways of the Buddhist people. (DVD
THE SUFIS, 1971, Idries Shah. Sufism.

THINKERS OF THE EAST, 1971, Idries Shah. Sufism.
THE WAY OF ZEN, 1999, Alan Watts.
ZEN AND THE ART OF MOTORCYCLE MAINTENANCE, 1974, Robert M. Pirsig. Arguably one of the most profoundly important essays ever written on the nature and significance of "quality" and definitely a necessary anodyne to the consequences of a modern world pathologically obsessed with quantity. Although set as a story of a cross-country trip on a motorcycle by a father and son, it is more nearly a journey through 2,000 years of Western philosophy. For some people, this has been a truly life-changing book.
ZEN MIND, BEGINNER'S MIND, 1973, D.T. Suzuki.
