The
Meaning of Witchcraft
by Gerald Gardner
Thought to be the father of modern witchcraft, Gerald Gardner
published The Meaning of Witchcraft in 1959, not long after
laws punishing witches were repealed. It was the first sympathetic
book written from the point of view of a practicing witch.
"The meaning of witchcraft is to be found, not in strange
religious theories about God and Satan, but in the deepest
levels of the human mind, the collective unconscious, and
the earliest developments of human society. It is the deepness
of the roots that has preserved the tree." The Meaning
of Witchcraft is an invaluable source book for witches today.
Chapters include: * Witchs Memories and Beliefs * The Stone
Age Origins of Witchcraft * Druidism and the Aryan Celts *
Magic Thinking * Curious Beliefs about Witches * Signs and
Symbols * The Black Mass * Some Allegations Examined*. Soft
Cover, 272 pgs.

The
Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries
by Z Budapest
A women’s
spirituality classic now back in print! The Holy Book of
Women’s Mysteries is essential for Pagans, feminists,
and women seeking to learn more about the spiritual path
as it relates to the feminine and the Goddess aspects of
witchcraft and Wicca. This book is not about reinstating
a matriarchy or tearing down patriarchy; it is about women’s
spirituality and its relationship with politics and lifestyle.
Z Budapest is one of the founding mothers of modern women’s
witchcraft, beginning with the establishment of Susan B.
Anthony Coven in Los Angeles in 1971. She catapulted herself
into the media spotlight when she was tried as a witch and
found guilty in 1975 after being arrested on Venice Beach
for reading tarot cards. She fought the charges and, after
a nine-year battle, won the right for every tarot reader
to do so legally. The Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries
is a seminal text that contains invaluable information on
Dianic witchcraft and spells, including everyday magick,
sabbat rituals, and divination methods; a section on how
vegetarian theories and politics relate to witchcraft and
the feminine aspect; and a good deal of information on goddesses
and how the patriarchal religions distorted old myths to
serve their own needs. There are several unique and beautiful
Rites of Passage for women and men that you don’t
often find, and Budapest’s personal life stories are
an equally valuable read, from her escape across the mountains
from Communist Hungary to her fight for women’s religious
freedom upon moving to America. This reprint features a
new introduction by Z. Budapest, in addition to essays by
luminaries such as Starhawk and Merlin Stone. This 334-page
trade paperback is a must have for any collection of Wiccan,
feminist, or magical works.

Aradia
or the Gospel of the Witches
by Charles G. Leland
Today, a great amount of debate exists over whether Aradia
was an authentic representation of Italian Witchcraft at the
time Leland published the manuscript. Some go so far as to
argue that Maddelena never really existed. While it is true
that Maddelena's involvement with Leland cannot be proven,
the fact remains that even with its uncertain origin, Aradia
is one of the most important manuscripts available to the
Pagan community. Even if it does not reflect the ideology
of a hidden tradition of Italian Witchcraft, it most definitely
presents such a powerful message that, even today, its words
are repeatedly found throughout Pagan literature. In fact,
it is the foundation for one of the most powerful and well
known documents in modern pagan lore,
" The Charges Of The Goddess ". Paperback. 160 pgs.

Aradia
- Gospel of the Witches (basic edition)
by Charles Leland
When
Charles Godfrey Leland published Aradia at the end of the
nineteenth century, he did not realize that he was providing
the key source book that would be the missing link between
ancient and modern witchcraft. Indeed, this book was the
foundation upon which Gerald Gardner built his revival in
the 1940s and `50s. Not only did Aradia inspire Gerald Gardner,
Doreen Valiente, and the other founders/revivers of twentieth
century Neopagan witchcraft, it continues to serve as a
reference, check point and inspiration for others. "Probably
the first major influence (on the lineage of modern witchcraft)
in relatively modern times is that of Charles Godfrey Leland,"
said Doreen Valiente. When Gardner gave her the responsibility
for rewriting some of their coven’s key rituals, she
took Leland’s translation of Aradia and, using it
for inspiration, wrote the now standard version of the "Charge
of the Goddess", which is one of the most important
rituals in modern Wicca. At this one hundredth anniversary
of its first publication, Aradia continues forward, valued
even today by the wisest followers of the "new"
old religion.
